We are excited to announce that the Dedham High School Band will be performing a tribute to America at the Statue of Liberty on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The School Committee approved the trip on September 23, setting into motion a memorable year for band members as they prepare for this historic performance.
The band will spend 3 days and 2 nights in New York, and have the opportunity to visit the 9/11 Memorial, attend a Broadway show, and visit other NYC landmarks. The highlight of the trip will be the opportunity to represent the Town of Dedham with a performance of patriotic music at one of America’s most iconic landmarks. Students will spend this school year planning the program, rehearsing for the event, and raising funds to pay for the costs associated with sending a 50-piece band to New York City.
Our challenge is to find a way for all students to attend. It will take over $25,000 to transport students and instruments, house them, and arrange an itinerary that will allow band members to explore New York, a city at the center of the arts in America. After starting student trip accounts last school year, we are ramping up our fund raising activities for the trip.
We are excited to work alongside the Boston Celtics to offer tickets to supporters with proceeds going to our trip account. The Celtics offer this program specifically to Music Departments in the area. If you are interested in attending a Celtics game, click on the flyer to learn more about it. If you fill out the order form, send it along with payment to: Jeff Bolduc; Director of Fine Arts; 140 Whiting Ave., Dedham 02026. We appreciate any support, and please check back here throughout the fall for more ways you can support this performance becoming a reality.
The elementary after-school lesson program continues to grow. Over 120 students are enrolled as lessons begin at each school. Students are studying both string and band instruments with teachers from the Dedham School of Music. Look forward to amazing performances in December when these budding musicians perform at each school’s Holiday Concerts.
We’d like to welcome two new members to the Dedham Fine Arts faculty. Music teachers Sara Allen and Gabrielle Zimbardo will be teaching music and chorus as they join our school system. Ms. Allen teaches at Avery. Ms. Zimbardo is assigned to Greenlodge, and they share students at the Oakdale School. Ms. Allen will conduct the Oakdale 4th grade chorus, with Ms. Zimbardo directing the 5th grade chorus. You can see their Bio’s in the Our Faculty link above.
