Fine Arts students and teachers begin preparations for a steady schedule of performances through the winter and spring. Events can be found in the Fine Arts calendar posted at the top of the page. Please mark your calendar to attend events that may be of interest to you. Visit this site regularly for updates and highlights of our students amazing school year in the arts.
Three Dedham HS Seniors were accepted into the MMEA Eastern District Music Festival. Students auditioned in November along with musicians from over 100 schools in eastern Mass. It is quite an honor to earn a place in the band, chorus, jazz band, or orchestra. The Festival was held in early January and featured amazing performances at Boston Latin HS. Noah Littman earned district status all 4 years at Dedham High. He played trombone in the Concert Band. Cellist Andra Dean was accepted for her second appearance with the Orchestra. Joseph Borsellino was first chair Tenor Sax in the Jazz Band. Joe was also selected to audition for the All-State Jazz Band later in January. This is his second year being accepted to districts and receiving an All-State recommendation. Congratulations to all three for this well-deserved honor.
Band students district-wide are quickly preparing for the All Town Band Concert on Thursday, February 4th. The concert will be held in the DHS Gym and feature Band students grades 4-12 and the two competitive high school winter groups in an early season preview. The concert starts at 7. Get there early as parking will be at a premium. Donations will be accepted at the door.
We will be using the All Town concert to draw prizes for the Many-Ways-to-Win raffle. DHS students are raising needed funds to send the band and AVE chorus to NYC in May to represent Dedham with a performance at the Statue of Liberty. Tickets can be purchased from students, and at the door before the concert. The current prize list is posted in the upper right column. Check back often as prizes continue to be donated. If you would like to contribute, contact Fine Arts Director Jeff Bolduc (info below).
The DHS students would like to acknowledge business donors and families who contributed to this raffle. We wouldn’t get to NYC without the support of the entire community. THANK YOU!
On January 7, 2016, at the Lower Level Gallery of the Dedham Community Theatre, Dedham Square Artist Guild members and Dedham High School students showcased their Small Works. Dedham High School student Michael Diaz commented about the show, “I enjoyed the Small Works challenge because it is based off our own creativity!” Khany’Ja Tolbert, another participating student artist commented “The Small Works challenge was a mini-concentration for me. I enjoy using watercolor pencils.”
Now in its 3rd year, Artist Challenges invites artists living in Massachusetts to create work based on a theme. This work can be 2D or 3D, in any medium. Artists submit up to two (2) pieces for consideration in the show. The Guild is always interested in helping to foster young artists, and recently opened Artists Challenges to Dedham High School students, who participated in this show at no charge. The pieces will remain on display until February 29th.
Participating High School students are: Chloe Adams, Lydia Baker, Michael Diaz, Jade Sao, and Khanyja Tolbert.
The Little Library project was started almost two years ago as a project involving DHS art and shop students, the Dedham Artist Guild, and the Dedham Library Innovation Team (D-LIT). The resulting ‘libraries’ have been installed around town, creating kiosks for residents to share books throughout the year. Special thanks to the many students who designed, built, or painted these structures, and to art teacher Maureen O’Sullivan and shop teacher David Haluska for coordinating this project with their students.
Our high school competitive winter ensembles will begin their season in just a few weeks. We have added their performances to the Fine Arts calendar (above). The Winter Guard will be performing their show ‘Living’ starting on January 30th at Salem HS. Winter Percussion has designed a custom show titled: ‘The Big Bad WOLF Gang’, featuring music by Mozart in a modern setting. They begin their season at a competition at Dartmouth HS on February 20th. Good luck to both groups. You can see their programs at the All-Town concert on February 4th.
The DHS Drama Club has started rehearsing their annual entry into the METG Drama Festival on February 27th. Drama advisor Mr. Nicholson has chosen the play ‘4 AM’ to highlight the talents of our thespians. Dramafest is a statewide event with over a hundred high schools participating at sites all over Massachusetts on that Saturday. Schools are then selected to go onto the state semi-finals, and then the finals on the weekend of March 31 and April 1 and 2. We will update info here when we find out the time and location of our preliminary round.
We have added a concert to our performance calendar. The All-Town String Concert will be held on March 29th at Dedham Middle School. The concert will feature string students from grades 3 and up. It should be a great showcase for our rapidly growing orchestra programs.
